The recording of the online event “Is the debt crisis killing the SDGs?” is online. The event took place during the HLPF on July 16, 2024 (Tuesday).
The debt crisis has immense negative impact on the SDGs. Countries are forced by International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank to reduce social expenditures – including health, education, and social protection. Also, investments in environmental protection, climate change adaption and mitigation can’t be financed anymore because of high debt services. There is a need for another international debt architecture – respecting human rights – and ways to finance the SDGs in a just way.
