Recording of the session: Universal Social Security and the Social Contract

The side event "Universal social security and the social contract: A critical examination through case studies" took place at the Civil Society Policy Forum of the 2024 Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Group (WBG) on October 23rd, 2024. The event included presentations by Amnesty International, the Arab Reform Initiative, Act Church of Sweden, and the World Bank. Watch the recording

World Bank, IMF are Missing the Mark on Social Security

The GCSPF published five case study briefs about the harms of austerity and means-testing, authored by a group of economic justice, human rights, and faith-based organizations, exposing the failure of IMF and World Bank-backed programs. The cases cover Argentina, South Africa, Serbia, Sri Lanka, and a brief demonstrating that universal social security systems can be both affordable and feasible. What Next for Financing Social Protection and Health Services?

This paper was prepared as part of a project for the United Nations, which is assisting its Member States, international institutions, civil society and private sector stakeholders who are preparing the fourth International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD), which is to take place in Seville, Spain, 30 June - 3 July 2025. The paper addresses practical and political challenges in designing and adopting adequate financing of social protection and healthcare with domestic revenues and international support in "normal" times and in crisis times. Meetings of the GCSPF

The Core Team Strategy and the Regional meetings will take place in Johannesburg, South Africa in November 2024.
The aim of the Core Team Strategy Meeting is to bring together the members of the Core Team in order to define short, mid and long-term future.
The regional meeting is meant to strengthen involvement of non-CT members in the work of the coalition and its working groups, as well as to listen to current regional news and advocacy priorities.

The recording of the event Strategy Meeting Towards the Second World Social Summit for Social Development is now online. The event was held at the Global People's Assembly 2024 on Monday, 23 September.
The objective of this session was to create a collective work agenda to fill the existing social dimension gap, through the review of the good and not so good done since Copenhagen, and the addressing of the challenges the social world faces nowadays.

Structuring global funding for social protection: The Global Public Investment approach

The urgent need to fix the gaps in the global financial institutions that leave social protection under-funded, especially in low-income countries, is increasingly widely recognized. This article suggests that the Global Public Investment (GPI) approach offers an opportunity to provide a fresh start for social protection financing. GPI can enhance the building of universal social protection floors and systems, especially for the poorest countries. Including non-traditional donors and ensuring a fair decision-making process will secure higher levels of funding to build and strengthen universal social protection systems and floors to benefit those in need worldwide. This article analyzes how this approach could be effective whether the idea of a ‘Global Fund for Social Protection’ (GFSP), proposed to embody solidarity and responsibility in addressing profound gaps in social protection globally, operates independently from or is integrated into an already-existing intergovernmental organization. Justicia Social y Gobernanza Internacional: América Latina ante la toma de decisiones mundial

Estamos en un momento clave de importantes eventos para la comunidad internacional, tales como la Cumbre del Futuro, y en el proceso preparatorio de reuniones globales, G20, Cumbre de BRICS, Cuarta Conferencia Internacional sobre la Financiación para el Desarrollo y la Segunda Cumbre Mundial sobre Desarrollo Social, en las que se discutirá no solo la agenda de desarrollo de los próximos años/décadas sino también la propia gobernanza multilateral.
Es en este marco que organizamos este ciclo de videoconferencias para promover espacios de análisis, intercambio y debate sobre cómo priorizar la justicia económica, social, climática y de género en la región y cómo promover el diálogo social que haga posible un nuevo pacto social y económico inclusivo y participativo.
Este ciclo fue organizado por Social Watch, la GCSPF, Global Initiative for Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (GI-ESCR) y Latindadd.

Civil Society Call for a Global Fund for Social Protection

Civil society organizations and trade unions unite to call for a Global Fund for Social Protection to protect the most vulnerable.

Social Security for All

Civil society organizations and trade unions call governments and international financial institutions to make a commitment to create social security systems that enable everyone to realize their rights. Governments and financial institutions should end policies that have been failing millions of people.

SP&PFM Programme

The programme Improving Synergies Between Social Protection and Public Finance Management provided medium-term support to multiple countries aiming to strengthen their social protection systems at a national level and ensure sustainable financing. The programme aimed to support countries in their efforts towards achieving universal social protection coverage.
This initiative was implemented jointly by the ILO, Unicef, and the GCSPF.
