Aid targeted at supporting social protection has historically captured a very small fraction (about 2 per cent) of total global aid budgets, although in absolute terms they increased by approximately 60 per cent between 1995–99 and 2015–19. This EBA Report (by Miguel Niño-Zarazúa, Ana Horigoshi, Alma Santillán Hernández and Ernesto Tiburcio) demonstrates that, while international aid has contributed to the expansion of social safety net programmes in poor countries, the share of aid that is targeted towards social protection has decreased globally.
